When people think about an amusement park in Japan, famous places like Tokyo Disneyland or Universal Studios Japan usually come to mind. However, hidden between Osaka and Kyoto lies a charming and historic theme park that many travelers overlook is Hirakata Park.
Located in Hirakata City, this historic park is often called “Hirapa” (ひらパー) by locals. Hirapa has been entertaining visitors for more than a century. In fact, Hirakata Park first opened in 1910, making it one of the oldest operating amusement parks in Japan. While it may not have the massive scale of Japan’s biggest theme parks, its long history and relaxed atmosphere make it a unique destination worth visiting.
For travelers exploring the Kansai region, this amusement park in Osaka is a great day trip, offering classic rides, scenic views, and surprisingly scary roller coasters.
A Historic Amusement Park in Japan

With more than 100 years of history, Hirakata Park is a special place in the world of Japanese amusement parks. Originally developed during Japan’s rapid modernization in the early 20th century, the park was designed as a recreational destination for people traveling along the railway line connecting Osaka and Kyoto.
Today, the park blends old-school charm with modern attractions. Visitors can enjoy:
- Roller coasters and family rides
- A large Ferris wheel with views of the surrounding area
- Seasonal events such as winter illuminations and flower gardens
- Kid-friendly attractions and water parks during summer
Compared to larger parks, Hirakata Park feels more relaxed and less crowded, making it easier to explore at your own pace. For many locals, it’s a nostalgic place they visited during childhood.
Thrilling Rides and Fun Attractions at Hirakata Park
One of the best things about visiting Hirakata Park is the wide variety of attractions available. The park has around 40–45 rides and attractions, ranging from intense roller coasters to relaxing rides that you can enjoy with friends or family.
For thrill seekers, two rides stand out in particular: Red Falcon and Elf.
Red Falcon

The Red Falcon is the largest roller coaster in the park and one of the most famous attractions. The ride stretches for about 1.3 kilometers and reaches speeds of around 70 km/h, making it one of the most exciting rides at Hirakata Park. When you first see the Red Falcon climbing high above the park, it looks very intimidating. The train slowly climbs up before racing down the track with several twists and drops.
Surprisingly though, the ride itself is not as scary as it looks. Because the track is long and smooth, you actually get time to enjoy the views of the park and the surrounding area while riding. At certain moments, you can see the landscape of Hirakata and parts of Osaka in the distance.
That said, the ride still has a few sudden drops and turns that will definitely make your heart race. There is one section where the coaster suddenly dives downward, which gives you that classic roller coaster feeling in your stomach. So while the Red Falcon might not be the scariest roller coaster in Japan, it is still thrilling enough to make you scream a little while enjoying the view.
Elf (A Wooden Roller Coaster)

Another popular ride is Elf, a wooden roller coaster that has a very different feeling from the Red Falcon. Unlike modern steel roller coasters, wooden coasters have a slightly rougher and shakier ride. This makes Elf feel much more intense, even though it isn’t the fastest ride in the park.
The coaster moves quickly through tight turns and hills, sometimes passing very close to the wooden supports. For me personally, Elf was actually scarier than Red Falcon, but it was also incredibly fun. If you enjoy roller coasters with a bit more thrill, this ride is definitely worth trying.
Fun Rides for Friends and Couples

Not every attraction at Hirakata Park is about scary roller coasters. The park also has many rides that are perfect if you want something more relaxed and fun with friends or family. One attraction that stood out to me was the Gnome Train (ノームトレイン). This ride takes you through a small fantasy-themed world filled with colorful decorations and cute characters.
The train slowly travels through different scenes, making it a relaxing break after the more intense roller coasters. While it might look like a ride mainly for children, it’s actually quite charming and enjoyable for adults as well. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break from the thrill rides and simply enjoy something calm and playful. The Gnome Train is perfect for that, especially if you’re visiting the park with friends or your partner.
Winter Ice Skating

Another thing that makes Hirakata Park unique is that the park changes with the seasons. During winter, the park opens an outdoor ice skating rink, allowing visitors to enjoy skating inside the amusement park. I decided to try it, and it turned out to be a lot of fun. However, it also reminded me that I definitely need more skating practice!
At the beginning I felt a little unstable on the ice, but after a while it became easier. Watching other people skate smoothly around the rink made me realize how much practice skating actually takes. Even if you’re not very good at skating, it’s still a fun activity and a great way to experience something different inside the park.
Food Options Inside the Park

Hirakata Park has plenty of food choices, including typical Japanese meals such as omurice, ramen, and various snacks. There are also international options like McDonald’s, so you won’t have trouble finding something you like.
We decided to try the ramen, and it turned out to be surprisingly delicious. One thing I would recommend is ordering the regular size, because the portions are actually quite large. I ordered a ramen set meal, which came with fried rice and other side dishes.
At first it looked manageable, but halfway through the meal I realized it was almost too much food! Still, it tasted so good that I ended up finishing everything. The ramen was flavorful and comforting, and the fried rice was especially delicious.
After spending the day riding roller coasters and walking around the park, it was the perfect meal to end the experience.
Taking Advantage of the Keihan Railway Ticket Deal
One of the easiest ways to reach Hirakata Park is by using the Keihan Railway. The Keihan line runs between Osaka and Kyoto and conveniently stops at Hirakata-Koen Station, which is just a short walk from the park. What makes the trip even better is a special discount ticket package offered by the railway. With this ticket, you can add Hirakata Park admission for a small additional price when purchasing your train ticket. This combination deal makes it a very affordable way to visit the park.
We decided to take advantage of this ticket because we were already planning to travel along the Keihan line. The pass allowed us to explore different places, including Kyoto, before heading to Hirakata Park later in the day. Along the way, you can also stop at popular stations such as Yodoyabashi, Hirakata-shi, and Demachiyanagi, making it easy to explore both Osaka and Kyoto.
For travelers who want to explore the Kansai region efficiently, this ticket option is a fantastic deal.
Exploring Around Hirakata-shi Station

Since the park allows visitors to enter, leave, and re-enter, we decided to briefly explore the area around Hirakata-shi Station before spending more time inside the park. The station has undergone redevelopment in recent years and now features modern buildings, shopping areas, and restaurants.

One place that immediately caught our attention was a stunning bookstore space with very tall Japanese bookshelves that stretched up several floors.
The shelves were enormous, creating a dramatic interior that felt more like a modern art installation than a typical bookstore.
For book lovers and architecture enthusiasts, this space is incredibly impressive.
The towering shelves filled with books give the entire area a calm and stylish atmosphere.
This kind of design highlights the beauty of Japanese bookshelves, where books are displayed almost like decorative elements. It’s a great example of how Japanese design blends functionality with aesthetics.
Even if you are visiting Hirakata Park primarily for the rides, it’s worth taking some time to explore the Hirakata-shi Station as well.
A Surprisingly Affordable Dinner

After spending time exploring Hirakata Park and the station area, we started looking for a place to have dinner. One restaurant that immediately stood out was MEAL TOGETHER ROOF TERRACE.
The interior looked extremely stylish and elegant, almost like a high-end restaurant you might expect to find in a luxury district. The lighting, décor, and overall atmosphere made it feel like a fancy dining experience.
Naturally, we expected the prices to be quite expensive. However, when we checked the menu, we were surprised to find that the prices were actually very reasonable. In fact, the meal ended up being quite affordable for such a beautiful restaurant.
The food was delicious, and the relaxed atmosphere made it a perfect way to end the day.
Why Hirakata Park Is Worth Visiting
Visiting Hirakata Park turned out to be much more than just a trip to an amusement park. While it may not be the best amusement park in Japan in terms of size or scale, Hirakata Park offers character and history. For travelers looking for something different from the typical tourist attractions, Hirakata Park provides a refreshing alternative.
Here are a few reasons why it’s worth visiting:
- One of the oldest amusement parks in Japan
