Conveniently accessible from Oji Station via the Kintetsu train, this park offers stunning seasonal flowers, peaceful landscapes, delicious treats, and even a glimpse into Japan’s ancient history.
Whether you’re a flower lover, a history enthusiast, or simply searching for a peaceful park to unwind in, Umami-Kyūryō Park has something for everyone.
Introducing Umami-Kyūryō Park

Starting from Oji Station, you can catch a Kintetsu train and make your way to this beautiful park nestled in the Nara countryside. The journey itself is pleasant, and before you know it, you’ll be surrounded by greenery and fresh air.
As we approached the entrance, one of the first things that caught my attention was the tunnel leading into the park. It felt like a gateway to another world, allowing visitors to leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and step into a peaceful natural retreat.
A Paradise for Seasonal Flowers

One of the main attractions of Umami-Kyūryō Park is its incredible collection of Japanese flowers that bloom throughout the year. Depending on when you visit, you’ll be treated to completely different scenery, making it a destination worth returning to in every season.
During our visit, the Japanese irises were in full bloom, and they were absolutely breathtaking. Their elegant purple and blue petals created beautiful displays throughout the flower gardens. Walking among these vibrant flowers while enjoying the peaceful surroundings was a truly relaxing experience. It was impossible to resist stopping to take photos of the stunning scenery.
However, the irises are just one part of what makes this park special. Various sections of the gardens showcase different flowers depending on the season. From spring blossoms to summer blooms and autumn colours, there’s always something new to discover in this beautiful park.
Exploring the Park

Be prepared when exploring Umami-Kyūryō Park! It is surprisingly large! There are countless walking paths, open spaces, and hidden corners waiting to be explored.
There are also small decorated sections created by local residents. These displays added a warm sense of community to the park and made our walk even more enjoyable. It was lovely to see how locals contributed their creativity and care to enhance the park’s atmosphere.
Throughout the grounds, you’ll also find many Japanese ponds. Simply watching the reflections dance across the water while surrounded by lush greenery truly captures the peaceful essence of Japanese nature.
Discovering Ancient Tumulus History

Beyond its flowers and natural beauty, Umami-Kyūryō Park is also home to several ancient tumulus burial mounds, known in Japanese as kofun. These historic structures date back hundreds of years and offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into Japan’s ancient past.
Some of the famous tumuli within the park can be climbed, and the effort is absolutely worth it. From the top, we were rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the Nara countryside. Rolling fields, distant mountains, and peaceful residential areas stretched out before us.
It was a wonderful combination of history and nature that you don’t often find in one location.
Indulging in Sweet Treats at a Charming Japanese Cafe

Exploring such a large park naturally works up an appetite, and luckily, Umami-Kyūryō Park offers plenty of delicious options.
There were several food stalls set up throughout the park during our visit. Since it was an incredibly hot day, getting some shaved ice was an easy decision. The hardest part was choosing from the many flavours available!
We also visited the new Japanese cafe that had recently opened within the park. Of course, we couldn’t resist trying some of their sweets.
We ordered a unique gelato sandwich, where creamy gelato was sandwiched inside a croissant. The combination of the flaky pastry and refreshing gelato was absolutely delicious. We also tried a muffin filled with sweet red bean paste, a classic Japanese flavour that paired perfectly with the soft, freshly baked treat.
After spending time walking through the flower gardens and exploring the park grounds, relaxing at this charming Japanese cafe was the perfect way to end our visit.
