Huis Ten Bosch: A European Theme Park in Japan (Is It Worth It?)

Huis Ten Bosch is a European theme park in Japan that honestly doesn’t feel like Japan at all. Located in Kyushu near Nagasaki, this Dutch-style park is filled with canals, windmills, and even seasonal flowers like tulips. It’s a very different kind of Japanese theme park, more relaxed, less crowded, and surprisingly immersive.

But because it’s a bit out of the way, you might be wondering… is Huis Ten Bosch worth the trip?

Huis Ten Bosch is a Dutch-themed amusement park in Japan, inspired by the Netherlands. You’ll find:

  • European-style buildings
  • Beautiful canals
  • Seasonal flowers
  • Open, spacious streets

It’s very different from typical crowded theme parks. Instead of feeling rushed, you can actually relax and enjoy the environment.

Getting to Nagasaki

Nagasaki isn’t the easiest place to reach if you’re coming from Osaka or Tokyo. The train journey can be long and a bit inconvenient.

But here’s the easier option… Fly to Nagasaki Airport

That’s exactly what we did, and it made the trip so much smoother. Even better, if you stay at the same place we did, Hotel Europe! You can get a free bus ride from the airport to the hotel, which removes a lot of the stress.

Staying at Hotel Europe

We stayed at Hotel Europe, and honestly… it was incredible.

The hotel itself already feels like part of the experience. It matches the whole European atmosphere of Huis Ten Bosch, so it feels like your trip starts the moment you arrive.

One of the biggest perks?

Our stay included a ticket to Huis Ten Bosch, which made everything super convenient and added a lot of value.

We also chose the option that included breakfast, and it was definitely worth it. The buffet had so many options that I wanted to try everything… and ended up overeating (no regrets though).

Things to Do at Huis Ten Bosch

Even though Huis Ten Bosch looks calm and scenic at first, there are actually quite a few fun attractions to enjoy throughout the park.

AIR CRUISE the RIDE

This is Huis Ten Bosch’s version of a flying theatre ride, similar to Soaring Fantastic Flight at DisneySea. You sit suspended in the air and feel like you’re travelling across different parts of the world. The visuals are immersive, and the motion really gives you that flying sensation.

If you’ve experienced Soaring before, you’ll have a good idea of what it’s like but it still feels exciting and well done in its own way. It was easily one of the highlights of the park for me.

Mission Deep Sea

This one has more of an adventure feel to it. You go on a deep-sea mission where you explore underwater environments, almost like being inside a submarine. What made it more immersive was the small details… like the water sprays during certain moments, which made it feel more realistic. It’s not an intense ride, but it’s fun and something a bit different from what you usually find in a typical amusement park in Japan.

Horizon Adventure

This was surprisingly impressive. It’s an indoor water show where huge amounts of water are used as part of the experience. At times, it honestly feels like the whole place could flood with how much water is falling around you. The combination of visuals, sound, and water effects makes it very immersive, and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re spending a full day in the park.

Miffy & Friends

One thing I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did was meeting Miffy & Friends. The interaction felt more personal than I expected. Instead of just taking standard photos, the staff actually used our own phones, which made the experience feel more natural and memorable.

Around the Miffy-themed area, the whole space is designed around the character. The buildings, decorations, and even small details are all Miffy-themed, which makes it feel really cohesive.

There are also some cute rides in this area, along with plenty of shops where you can find all kinds of Miffy merchandise. If you like Miffy, this area is definitely fun to walk around and explore.

Tulips and Seasonal Flowers

If you visit during the right season, you’ll be able to see large fields of tulips. The flowers are well maintained and spread across different parts of the park, making it nice to just walk around and take your time. Combined with the European-style buildings and open spaces, it creates a really relaxing environment.

Even if you’re not specifically going for the rides, this is the kind of place where you can enjoy simply exploring and taking in the scenery.

Boat Ride & Scenery

amusement park in japan

One of the best ways to enjoy the park is simply by slowing down.

There’s a boat ride that takes you through the canals, giving you a different perspective of the park. It’s peaceful and a nice break from walking.

Even just wandering around is enjoyable. The whole park is designed for exploring.

Night Shows & Fireworks

Nagasaki Firework

At night, the park transforms. There are light shows, illuminations, and even fireworks festivals depending on the season.

Domtoren (Observation Tower)

Domtoren is the observation tower where you can see the entire area from above.

The view from the top is definitely worth it, especially if you enjoy taking photos or just want to get a better sense of the park layout.

I’d actually recommend going both during the day and at night. During the day, you can clearly see the canals, buildings, and surrounding scenery. At night, the whole park lights up, and the atmosphere feels completely different.

If you have the time, visiting twice gives you two very different experiences from the same spot.

Food at Huis Ten Bosch

Miffy Lunch

One thing that surprised me was the food.

Usually, food at a theme park in Japan can be expensive and average. But here, it was actually really good and reasonably priced.

We had Italian food, and it was genuinely delicious, which I didn’t expect from an amusement park.

Even the themed food was good. I tried the Miffy lunch, and it was not only cute but actually really tasty as well. It didn’t feel like it was just made for looks. The quality was there too.

What Makes Huis Ten Bosch Different?

The biggest difference compared to other theme parks like USJ or Disneyland: It’s not overcrowded.

You don’t feel rushed, you don’t spend the whole day waiting in lines, and you can actually enjoy your time. It’s more about the experience and atmosphere rather than just rides.

So… is it worth visiting?

Yes! Especially if you want something different.

If you’re expecting a thrill-packed park like USJ, this might not fully match that.

But if you want:

  • A unique European theme park in Japan
  • Beautiful scenery and flowers
  • Relaxed atmosphere

Then Huis Ten Bosch is absolutely worth it.

Final Thoughts

Huis Ten Bosch is one of those places that feels unexpected. It’s not as famous as other parks, but that’s exactly what makes it special.

From flying through the world on Soaring Fantastic Flight, to meeting Miffy & Friends, to walking through tulip-filled streets, it’s an experience that stands out.

If you’re planning a trip and want to explore beyond the usual spots, adding Nagasaki and Huis Ten Bosch to your list is definitely something I’d recommend.
