Things to Do in Tennoji Park: A Surprisingly Peaceful Escape

Tennoji Park, often called Tenshiba, is one of those places in Osaka that isn’t overcrowded with international visitors. Located right next to Tennoji Station and within walking distance of Abeno Harukas. The park is lively, green and full of locals. Yet at the same time, it feels calm and peaceful.

What makes Tennoji Park special is the contrast. Outside the park, trains come and go, the city feels busy, and Osaka moves at its usual pace.. Inside the park, atmosphere changes. Open lawns, relaxed walkaways, and the presence of the zoo create a space where you can spend hours to just relax.

Tennoji Zoo

One of the highlights of Tennoji Park is the Japanese zoo. Despite being located in the middle of a major city, the zoo feels unexpectedly peaceful. It’s cheap too! You can enter for just 500 yen, which makes it one of the most affordable attractions in Osaka.

Unlike some zoos that feel crowded or noisy, this zoo in Japan allows you to move at your own pace. Many of the animals are visible from close distances. During my visit, I found myself spending much longer than expected, simply watching animals move, rest, and interact with their environment.

Meet My Favorite Animals at Tennoji Zoo

japanese zoo
Name:Hisa
DOB:30th December 2017
Fun Facts:Hisa is known for being good at jumping and has a unique habit of hiding soybeans, which you can sometimes catch him eating. Watching hisa hop around was genuinely adorable. There’s something calming about observing an animal simply doing what it naturally does.

Masked Musang
Name:Pamu
DOB:1st July 2018
Fun Facts:Pamu is good at sleeping, something I immediately related to. You’ll often find Pamu resting high up, and when fruit is stuck to the glass, he stretches up and skillfully grabs it to eat. Even in his sleepy state, he’s surprisingly clever and precise.

Malayan Sun Bear
Name:Martha (Female)
DOB:26th June 2008
Fun Facts:With her sharp claws, she’s excellent at climbing trees. What amazed me most was how fast she was at grabbing treats. Compared to other bears, she seemed incredibly quick. Martha is clearly a competitive foodie, and honestly, I found that very relatable. Watching her move around with confidence was one of the hightlights of the visit.

Other Animals in Tennoji Zoo

Beyond these three, the zoo is home to many other animals. There’s a snowy owl that instantly reminded me of Harry Potter. Unlike many owls that sleep during the day, this one stays awake, calmly observing visitors.

You’ll also see lions casually using rocks as beds, which made me wonder how comfortable that really is, polar bear swimming gracefully, red panda sleeping peacefully, and rhinos that stare straight at you with an intensity. That’s a little scary but fascinating at the same time.

The zoo also features animals commonly seen in New Zealand, such as sheep and goats. Until recently, Tennoji Zoo was home to a single kiwi, making it a rare and special sight for visitors in Osaka. As kiwi are nocturnal and rarely seen even in New Zealand, many people didn’t even realize the zoo had one. Myself included. Sadly, the kiwi passed away quite recently, making the end of a very unique chapter for Tennoji Zoo. Its presence was quiet but meaningful especially for those who know how rare it was to see a kiwi in Japan.

Tenshiba: Food, Activities, and Seasonal Events

tennoji

During my visit, it was a Christmas season, and Tenshiba was filled with food stalls, that felt very much like a German-themed Christmas market. There were sausages, warm snacks, and festive lights everywhere. Everything looked incredibly tempting, and it was hard not to stop and try something.

Tenshiba is also a space for activities. You’ll often see people playing soccer, relaxing on the grass, or enjoying seasonal events like ice skating. If you’re interested in sports, you can even book a soccer field online (the site is in Japanese):

abeno harukas

Toilets near the zoo features displays of human figures with cat ears, and throughout the park, you can see Abeno Harukas, the tallest building in Osaka. The contrast between animals, greenery, and modern architecture creates a unique atmosphere that you don’t find in many cities.

Easy Access from Tennoji Station

One of the biggest advantages of Tennoji Park is how convenient it is. Located just minutes from Tennoji Station, it’s incredibly easy to visit. This makes it a perfect spot even if you only have a few hours to spare.

Conclusion

tenshiba

Tennoji Park may be full of life, animals, and activity, but it never feels overwhelming. Between the calm atmosphere of the zoo, the open space of Tenshiba, and the view of Abeno Harukas in the distance, it offers a surprisingly peaceful escape in the heart of Osaka.

If you’re looking for a place where you can slow down, observe quietly, and enjoy both nature and city life, Tennoji Park is absolutely worth a visit.
